The 1960s in the United States saw protest on several levels: civil rights, anti-war, free speech, free press, human rights, and urban conflict. Once you have chosen the theme of your paper, go to your local history center to discover what your community did during the 1960s. Read old newspapers, interview a relative, neighbor, or acquaintance about what life was like during the time. Use your local sources and interview to construct your paper to analyze the time period, essentially analyze the theme of protest you chose. Themes can include free speech, anti-war, civil rights, human rights, urban riots, etc. As you set up your paper, remember the comments from the previous writing assignments— Set the historical context Introduce your subject lay out the thesis and order of your paper Avoid any personal bias or the use of I Use footnotes; it is never acceptable to leave off citations Paraphrase and use your own words; CITE your material; Do not copy and paste Analyze the event in history, do not just summarize the documents Consult the text book to qualify conclusions and set the time context. Each paper should be at least 1500 words, typed, double-spaced, and spell-checked. Use only the sources provided—no outside sources are allowed. In addition, papers should be clear, coherent, and precise as possible. Consult Plagiarism file on files page of Course. Plagiarism and/or lack of citation in this final paper will result in E for the course. Several of you have received multiple warnings from me about plagiarism and copy/paste material—don’t do it—you will receive a failing grade in the course. Citation references should follow standard historical practice. You should still use the footnote format within the paper used for the last assignment and the shortened style for the second/subsequent references.
