The numbers indicate the total delegates to the Electoral College from each state, and how many eligible voters a single delegate from each state represents. Would it be more equitable if we shifted to electing a president through a direct popular vote where each voter, no matter where he or she is located, counts as one single vote? Why or why not?
7— Madison wrote that a faction is present when “a number of citizens, whether amounting to a majority or minority of the whole …are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adverse to the right of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community.” How does this relate to political parties?
8—Complete the table below showing the differences between how the Articles of Confederation and the US Constitution address the three items in the left-hand column.
Weakness Found in Articles of Confederation
Corrective Action Found in Constitution
Ability to Raise and Fund Military
# of Members of Congress Per State
Executive Branch Authority
9— Over 47 million Americans believe—as of polling conducted by PPP Research in 2013—that the U.S. government can control our minds through the television (they cannot). What are the implications of this for democracy?
10— How would you best describe the differences between the modern Republican and Democratic parties in the United States of America?
